A netbook is essentially designed for web-browsing and gaming. It is more compact in size than a laptop (9 inch screens on some) and therefore, more portable. It will provide you with great speed and excellent functionality. However, it lacks a few features which a laptop possesses, such as a dvd/rom drive.
A laptop had more of the functionality of a personal computer. In general, it has a thirteen to seventeen in screen and it typically has more onboard memory and RAM.
You can download on both. You can watch video on both. And just about any program your heart could desired can be used on both. You can watch video stored on your jump drive with both. Yes to the podcasts and jump drive question for both.
In short, they’re both great products: one is just a bit more functional, the other more portable.
Happy shopping!

A netbook is basically a smaller version of a laptop. You can use it
for internet and email. It should have a usb port or two. It also should
have wireless internet capability. It will probably not have a cd/dvd
drive, but you can purchase an external one. Download capabilities
are there, but it will probably have a smaller hard drive.

A netbook IS a laptop. It’s a certain type of laptop. They’re known for being extra small — which can be a good thing and a bad thing — yet able to run your normal programs like a web browser. A netbook’s screen is generally a much smaller form factor to make the complete size of the netbook very slim.
Pros vs cons:
—
+ CHEAP
+ Portable
+ Can run basic programs
+ Can connect to wireless networks
+ Useful for transporting data on-the-go
+ Many netbooks run a form of Unix
+ Fun for computer gurus to mess with
- Almost too small
- Small keyboard
- Lower memory
- Worse graphics
- Smaller screen
- Cannot run advanced programs usefully
- Manufactured with cheaper materials
—
All it boils down to is:
1. Do you need your computer to be portable?
2. Do you need the price to be low?
Netbooks are relatively VERY cheap for the computer market. It’s a good gift for a child rather than getting them a $1,000 laptop. Netbooks can range anywhere from $100 to $600.
To answer your original questions:
- Netbooks can run emails and your Internet browser
- It should have a USB port
- Most have wireless capabilities
- You can download programs like DIVX
- You can load files stored on a USB jump drive
- You can download podcasts and any file.
- You can move any file to a jump drive.
Hope this helps!

Software wise:
Some netbooks run specialized operating systems that only allow you to do what is built in. Those kind of netbooks are like over sized pdas.
You can also find some with slimmed down versions of Windows so you could do anything you could do on a normal laptop.
Hardware wise:
Net books are ultra portable laptops with smaller screens, less power, less space. They are designed primary to do internet and media tasks. They come with usb and built in wireless. You won’t be playing any 3d based games on a netbook.
